With the rise of every day, Google introduces alterations to its ranking algorithms. Some of them are the tiny jerks, and others may seriously shake up the SERPs.

Have a look at some of the Google Algorithm Updates
Launched on 24 February 2011, the main task of Panda is to assign “quality score”, to the web pages. This score is further an important element that is considered while ranking the web page or web site. Earlier, Panda was considered as a filter, but since January 2016, it is completely incorporated as a part of Google’s ranking algorithm.
- Humming bird
Hummingbird, another Google update was launched on August 22, 2013. This algorithm helps Google to better infer the search queries and provide results matching with the intent of the searcher. Though keywords are considered to be important, Hummingbird makes it possible for the pages to rank for a query even if they don’t contain the exact keywords as entered by the user. This is truly achieved by natural language processing that depends on the latent semantic indexing, co-occurring terms and the synonyms.
Penguin was launched on April 24, 2012, with the main aim of down-ranking the sites whose links it supposes to be devious. Since, late 2016, Penguin has become a part of Google’s core algorithm and works in real time, unlike Panda.
The pigeon was launched in the US on July 24, 2014, and in the UK, Canada, and Australia on December 22, 2014. Pigeon has a main focus on the searches where the location of the user plays an important role. With this update, closer relations between the local and the core algorithm were created.
Another update launched on April 21, 2015, was Mobile. This update of Google ensured that the mobile-friendly pages are ranked on the top of the mobile search and the ones not optimized for mobile are strained out from the SERPs.
- Rank Brain
Rank Brain launched on 26 October 2015, is a part of the Google’s Humming Bird algorithm. This is a kind of machine learning system that helps Google to know and understand the actual meaning of the queries and provide the best machine search results. The rank brain is considered to be the third most important factor used for ranking the web page or website.
Launched on September 1, 2016, Possum update made sure that the variations in the local results occur due to the location of the searcher. This means that the closer you are to the business address, you are more likely to see the search results. Furthermore, Possum gave a push to the businesses that are located outside the physical city area.
On March 8, 2017, another updated by the name Fred was launched. The main task of Fred is to target and aim at the websites that violate Google’s webmaster instructions. Most of the affected sites are of blogs with low-quality posts that are created for the purpose of generating ad revenue.
